inflammatory response Flashcards
purpose of inflammatory response
-defend against potential pathogens
-eliminate effects of an injury
-clear out damaged/destroyed cells
-initiate repair
three main stages of inflammatory response
- initiation
- vasodilation
- migration
initiation
-pathogens are introduced in the body during injury
-immune cells in nearby tissues release cytokines
-mast cells degranulate, releasing histamine
vasodilation
histamine released binds to receptors on nearby blood vessels, causing :
-vasodilation
-increased permeability of blood vessels
-attraction of phagocytes
migration
many components of the innate immune system can now enter the site of injury as a result of widening of blood vessels, and increased permeability, including :
-phagocytes that have been attracted by cytokines
-complement proteins
