Selective Breeding Flashcards
1
Q
Selective breeding/artificial selection
A
The changing of a populations gene pool due to humans altering the breeding behaviour of animals and plants to develop a desired trait
2
Q
Selective breeding and genetic diversity
A
Decreases genetic diversity more than natural selection as natural selection selects a variety traits as a result of a variety of selection pressures, but artificial selection only selects for one trait
3
Q
Artificial selection steps
A
- Variation - individuals in a population vary genetically
- Heritability - individuals can pass on their traits to offspring
- Intervention - selection is determined by humans who alter the breeding population
- Breeding - breeding population reproduces naturally or through human-induced breeding, occurs over many generations
4
Q
Natural selection steps
A
- Variation - individuals in a population vary genetically
- Heritability - traits are passed into offspring
- Environmental selection pressures - causes struggle for survival, some survive and reproduce better as a result of an advantageous phenotype
- Fitter organisms pass on their genes - traits become more common, changing allele frequencies
