lymphatic system Flashcards
lymphatic system
a network of tissues, vessels and organs that work together to move a colourless, watery fluid called lymph back into your bloodstream
roles of the lymphatic system
- transportation of APCs to secondary lymphoid tissues for antigen recognition and the third line of defence
-production of leukocytes, including lymphocytes in primary lymphoid tissues
-removal of fluid from tissues around the body
three major components of the lymphatic system
-primary lymphoid tissues
-secondary lymphoid tissues
-lymphatic vessels
Primary Lymphoid Tissues
-responsible for the creation and maturation of lymphocytes
-consists of the bone marrow and thymus gland
where do the b lymphocytes mature, and where are they made?
made and mature in bone marrow
where do the t lymphocytes mature, and where are they made?
made - bone marrow
mature - thymus gland
secondary lymphoid tissue
responsible for maintaining mature lymphocytes and initiating the adaptive immune response
main ones :
-lymph nodes
-spleen
what do mature lymphocytes do in the secondary tissues?
scan passing lymph for complimentary apcs or pathogens
lymph movement
- fluid from blood vessels (extracellular fluid) leaks into body tissues
- lymph enters lymphatic capillaries which turn into the lymphatic vessels, which lead into a lymph node
lymph movement in lymph nodes
- lymph arrives via afferent lymphatic vessels
- leaves via efferent
cortex in lymph node
b cells cluster together here
paracortex in lymph node
t cells cluster together here, as well as apcs
