They loved him like a father but this ideology was shattered in ST Petersburg 1905, Bloody Sunday

It has ruled since 1613 and its 300th celebration brought wave of population towards tsar

Was powerful and supported the government

Controlled by nobles and supported the government which used the cossacks to put down protests

Russia is very diverse with many nationalities, religions, and languages. and the only thing bringing them together was romanov dynasty

125M people spread out across Europe and Russia, made government more difficult b/c bad communication, roads, and few railings

Most of the population were peasants who lived in the country and are under the control of nobles

Towns/ Factories starting to grow causing poverty and poor living conditions
Nicholas was an autocrat 1905
Forced to sign Duma (parliament) which had no power, Tsar dismissed them if they disagreed with him.
He carried out everything alone without even a secretary = weak tsar and he failed to act in crisis of 1917
Opposition to government
From social revolutionaries (wanted a peasant revolution), communists, who were divided into moderate menshviks and extrmist bolshvicks
After 1900 many assassinations + protests occured (bloody sunday, murder of prime minister stolypin 1911)
