When troubleshooting video related issues to a system. What are the 12 things to check for?
- Check all connections, e.g making sure monitor is properly inserted into video card.
- Power cycle the computer, display and any power protection equipment. This can fix all kinds of issues.
- Check for onboard video setting in the BIOS. If you have just installed a new video card to a computer that had onboard video you will have to disable it.
- Check Resolution and Refresh settings to ensure a sharp and smooth picture( Always use the native refresh and resolution of the monitor you are using)
- Check the driver: Maybe a driver failed, or perhaps a wrong driver was installed causing image distortions.
You can boot into low-res mode or SAFE mode to fix this. - Check the version of DirectX
- Check the temperature threshold of the video card. If temps are surpassed this can cause throttling or even system shut down
- Use software to check and repair stuck or dead pixels.
- Calibrate the monitor. This can be done using windows built in calibration tool.
- Use a filter on the monitor itself for those who complain about eye strain or glare.
- Check for newly installed applications. New applications could cause the display to malfunction.
- Last check inside the computer. E.G. to make sure one of the video connections inside aren’t loose. Check that video card is seated properly into PCIE slot.
Other than checking the connections what is another common solution for solving no video related issues?
- Can the input selection on the monitor.( E.G. HDMI, display port, DVI, VGA, etc.
- If image is dim check brightness controls.
To confirm if video issues maybe related to the monitor itself what can you do?
- Connect the monitor to a known working computer system, if there is no display/video on known working system then you know you have a bad monitor.
If you have display while booting up the system and see the BIOS screen then the Windows splash screen and then the display goes blank what can this be a sign of?
- Can be an issue related to windows. Can be an issue with the video driver or issues with the monitor description file can by bypassed by:
- Using VGA mode(F8) this is a basic mode any monitor can display.
If you are seeing odd patterns or artifacts on the screen what can sometimes be done to rectify this?
- Disable Hardware acceleration.
- Troubleshoot with software drivers.
If you are experiencing flickering, or see colour patterns which are incorrect what could be a fix for this?
- Could be caused by the pins in the cable expecially if you’re missing a colour.
- Replace the cable as required.
If the display is displaying a distorted image and geometry what can this be caused by and how to fix?
- Check the OS refresh rate and resolutions settings and make sure they match the displays specifications( native settings)
- Native resolution is important on LCD displays
- May also need to check the cable and replace if necessary.
If you are experiencing Unusual graphics what can be done to rectifiy?
- Check the Video card adaptor settings and make sure configured correctly.
If you experience image persistence how can this often be remedied?
- Turning the display off and then back on again.
If you experience Motion trails such as when you are moving the mouse around how can this often be fixed?
- Often this fixed by disabling advanced video features inside the video card settings.
If you experience BSOD( Blue screens Of Death) or Overheating related to a video card what can you do?
- Check the video drivers and make sure they are correct and up to date for the card being used.
- Monitor the internal temperature of the GPU and system using built in utilities in the BIOS or from Third party software.
