Q

What is the difference between a PCIe x 1 slot and a PCIe x 16slot

A
  • Visually the x 16 is much larger and typically used for PCIe video cards. They have 16 lane bus width. and are full duplex. the x16 slot communicates directly with the Northbridge
  • x1 expansion slot is much smaller and is typically used for other expansion cards outside of video cards and only has 1 lane bus width( often connected to the south bridge)

Q

What are the 8 steps involved in Installing a video card?

A
  1. Check if the card is compatible
  2. Ready the computer( Make sure computer is off)
  3. Ready the Video Card( remove from package/antistatic bag)implement anti ESD measures
  4. Document( take pics of card location, screws etc)
  5. Prepare the Slot( use phillips screwdriver to remove covers etc)
  6. Install the card into the slot: Insert using both thumbs.
  7. Connect Cables( e.g power cables/ 6-8 pin PCIE conenctor etc)
  8. Test

Q

How do you install an external eSATA adapter card?

A
  • Similar to installing a video card
    1. Unscrew the slot cover
    1. Insert the expansion card straight down into slot
    1. Then screw card in.
    1. Go into device manager and ensure device is shown if not download correct driver from manufacturer and install.

When it comes to CPU’s what are the differences between Hyper-Threading and multicore technologies?

A
  • Hyper-Threading enables a single core CPU to calculate two instruction sets simultaneously
  • Multi Core CPU’s calculate two or more instruction sets simultaneously( one instruction per core) .
  • HT technology essentially simulates multicore CPUS.

Q

What are the differences between an PGA and a LGA CPU socket?

A
  • PGA( Pin Grid Array) sockets accept CPUs that have pins on the underside , the pins are then pressed gently into place by the sockets retaining arm
  • LGA( Land Grid Array) sockets use lands that protrude out and touch the CPUs contact points. These type of CPUS don’t have pins that stick out on the underside. They offer better power distribution than PGA

Q

What should you do whenever you are removing and reinstalling a heat sink?

A
  • You should always reapply thermal compound when removing and reinstalling a heat sink.
18
Q

When looking at a PCI Expansion card how can you tell what voltages it supports?

A
  • IF it just has 1 notch towards the left edge of the card then it just supports 3.3volts
  • If the card has 2 notches then it supports 3.3volts and 5 volts
  • And if the card has 3 notches of it supports 3.3volts, 5 volts and is a 64 bit interface card.
19
Q

What has now replaced the traditional PCI slots?

A
  • PCIe( Express slot)
  • Replaced PCI, PCI-X and AGP ports.
  • Communicates serially.
  • Much more efficient.
20
Q

What throughput speeds do the various PCIE standards support?

A
  • PCIe version 1 supports up to 250mbps
  • PCIe version 2 supports up to 500mbps
  • PCIe version 3 supports up to 1Gbps
  • PCIe version 4 supports up to 2Gbps
  • PCI version 5 when releases promises to have up to 4GBps of throughput.
21
Q

If you are trying to plug in a PCIe adapter card but doesn’t have the vertical or horizontal clearance due to the orientation of the motherboard what can you do?

A
  • You can install a riser card. This installs vertically into a PCIe slot but then changes the direction of the interface enabling you to plug in a card horizontally essentially creating an elbow from the PCIe slot.
