DDR RAM( Comptia Objective 3.3) Flashcards
1
Q
How many pins does a DDR2 DIMM stick have?
A
- 240 pins and can’t be used in other DDR memory slots
2
Q
How many pins does a DDR3 DIMM stick have?
A
- Has 240 pins and can’t be used in other DDR memory slots
3
Q
How many pins does a DDR4 DIMM stick have>?
A
- Has 288 pins and can’t be used in other DDR memory slots
4
Q
In Short how do you select, install and verify RAM?
A
- Grab a stick of RAM that has the number of pins shown in the slot and ensure it lines up and fits correctly in the RAM slot with the notch somewhere close the middle this will ensure the RAM is of the correct type( DDR2, 3 or 4) Do not touch any of the pins
- Press down on top of the stick using thumbs to install and you should hear a click, do not use to much force the ears should lock into position
- Now do a POST( Power On Self Test ) with case open and boot into the BIOs and confirm system recognizes the newly installed RAM type and speed.
- Do several boots to confirm RAM is stable then boot into windows and ID RAM inside of Windows System Window or Task Manager.
5
Q
What is the difference between single, dual, triple and quad channel RAM architectures?
A
- Dual channel RAM essentially doubles the data throughput of single channel RAM giving you two independent 64bit channels and binding them together 128bit
- Triple channel takes this idea farther up to 192 bit bus
- Quad channel takes this to the next level with a 256 bit bus however a ram module must be inserted into all 4 channels to achieve those speeds. Missing 1 goes down to 192, missing 2 goes down to 128 etc.
6
Q
Why DIMM name?
A
- Dual Inline memory module, electrical contacts on each side of module and are different.
7
Q
What is the data width of DIMM?
A
- 64 bit
8
Q
Why is DIMM RAM considered to be Dynamic?
A
- Because it needs constant refreshing without refreshing the data in the memory dissapears.
9
Q
Why is memory called RAM?
A
- Means Random Access Memory because you can access any storage location at any time. Unlike magnetic tape.
10
Q
What is the max storage amount of DDR4 memory?
A
- Can store up to 64gbs per DIMM module.
11
Q
What is the max storage amount of DDR3 memory?
A
- Can store up to 16gbps per DIMM module.
12
Q
How many pins does a stick of DDR memory have?
A
- 184 pins.
