Installing a SOHO Network(Comptia Objective 2.3) Flashcards
What is a SOHO Router?
An all-in-one device
- Modem, router, switch, wireless Access point, firewall etc
What type of Routing options can a SOHO router have?
- Can support WAN/DSL via a port
- Provides switching including multiple LAN ports and 1 VLAN
What are some benefits of a SOHO Router?
- Not too much to configure
- Routes and switches by Default
- Connects a wireless network with ethernet network all in one device
Where would you configure WIFI frequencies within a SOHO router?
- Controlled in the Access point settings
- 2.4ghz/ 5ghz options available
- Can configure an SSID for the Network name along with the web encryption settings WPA2 preferred, preshared key or Enterprise
What assigns an dynamic IP address on a LAN network?
- The SOHO router itself will provide DHCP IP addresses for the internal network
- Can also provide DNS services if you have a local DNS server on your network otherwise handled by ISP.
Who assigns an dynamic IP address on a WAN network?
This is provided by the ISP( Internet Service Provider_
When installing and configuring a Wireless Network, how would you configure the wireless NIC?
- You need to first enable the Wireless NIC in the network settings
- Will need to set up an SSID/ password etc.
What is the difference between the 2.4ghz and 5ghz wireless frequencies?
- The 2.4ghz frequency operates between channels 1-11 on a wireless SOHO router. Whereas 5ghz operates between channels 48 to 165.
- Typically 2.4ghz will have high levels of interference due to many other devices using the same frequency such as microwaves, cordless phones, bluetooth etc. 5ghz in theory will have less interference or none and can increase bandwidth related issues due to interference.
- 5ghz transmits data faster than 2.4ghz however it has shorter range. 2.4ghz transmits data slower than 5ghz however it can transmit that data much farther than 5ghz.
What is MAC filtering and what is it also known as?
- MAC filtering is screening of computers that are allowed access to a device or network. This is based upon a MAC address that is unique to each wired and wireless device.
- Commonly a SOHO routers firewall will either employ white listing which only allows traffic access to MAC addresses on it’s approved list. Or uses black listing which is the opposite where all devices are allowed access except for those on the “ Black list)
- MAC filtering is also known as Access Control.
Source NAT also known as Port NAT does what?
- Source Network Address translation or Port Network Address translation.
- Translates all of your internal network devices into one single external IP address. Automatically assigned by the SOHO router.
Port Forwarding rules are also known as?
- Destination NAT( Network Address translation) or Static NAT( Network Address Translation)
- These specific rules do not expire or timeout.
QOS will allow you to do what?
- Prioritize internet traffic. E.G. Setting VOIP being set as high priority if you are using your network for voice calls.
- Can also be used to prioritize applications, ports or MAC addresses.
