When was cyclone nargis struck
May 2008
Economic impacts
$10 billion worth of damage
Majority of the population worked on rice fields therefore they lost their harvest and income
75% of buildings collapsed but on the delta 95% collapsed
Environmental impacts
The 2008 and 2009 harvest of rice were destroyed- The UN FAO estimated that nargis impacted 65% of the country paddies
Heavy rain fall
—> flood water penetrated an estimated 40-50 km inland from the coast farmland, live stock and fisheries were all destroyed
Social impact
55,000 people are still missing
77,000 dead
Diseases spread with many survivors dying from the disease
2.4 million people were affected by this cyclone structural damage throughout Myanmar causing over millions to be homeless
Management
Deforestation have been monitored by the government
Two large mangrove parka have been created,planting 2 million mangroves trees,raising awareness and nurturing new species.
What response was there
The military government of Myanmar was very reluctant to accept outside help for the disaster , which some think led to the high death toll.
Foreign aid workers were restricted from entering the country and helping
Aid was given by MEDC but more than a week after the event , only 1 in 10 people had received any help
