Transportation and Deposition Flashcards
Name the four transportation processes.
Traction, suspension, saltation, solution.
What is longshore drift?
Transport of sediment along a stretch of coastline caused by waves approaching the beach at an angle (in the direction of prevailing winds).
What is the first step of longshore drift?
The waves approach the beach at an angle, in the direction of prevailing winds.
What is the second step of longshore drift?
The swash (waves moving up the beach) carries material up and along the beach.
What is the third step of longshore dfit?
The backwash (waves moving back down the beach) carries material back down the beach at right angles. This is the result of gravity.
What is the fourth step of longshore drift?
This process slowly moves material along the beach and provides a link between erosion and deposition.
What is deposition?
When material being transported by the sea is dropped due to the water losing energy.
Where does coastal deposition take place?
Areas where the flow of water slows down.
Why are beaches found in bays?
As the energy is reduced. This is called wave refraction.
What is solution?
The dissolved chemicals often derived from limestone or chalk.
What is traction?
Large pebbles rolled along the seabed. (Think of a tractor wheel rolling slowly)
What is saltation?
A ‘hopping’ or ‘bouncing’ motion of particles too heavy to be suspended.
What is suspension?
Particles carried (suspended) in the water.
What is it called when particles of sediment are carried in the water?
Suspended.
What is it called when the particles have a ‘bouncing’ motion in the water.
Saltation.
