Population Pyramids Flashcards
What is a population pyramid?
A population pyramid is a type of graph which shows the percentage, or number, of males and females in each age group.
What does the dependency ratio represent in population pyramids?
The lower the dependency ratio, the greater number of people who work and are less dependent. The higher the number, the greater the number of people who are dependent on the working population.
What types of places have low dependency ratios?
Low depencency ratios are more common in HICs.
What types of places have high dependency ratios?
High dependency ratios are more common in NEEs and LICs.
What is the definition of a dependency ratio in population pyramids?
A dependency ratio is the proportion of people below 14 and above 65 (the normal working ages), related to the total population.
What is the formula for finding the dependency ratio?
((Young dependents (under 14) + old age dependents (over 65)) / working age population) * 100.
(Population pyramids in relation to the DTM) What shape is a stage 1 country?
A stage 1 country’s population pyramid is a triangle with edges curved inwards.
(Population pyramids in relation to the DTM) What shape is a stage 2 country?
A stage 2 country has an expanding population pyrmaid, and is a straight-lined triangle.
(Population pyramids in relation to the DTM) What shape is a stage 3 country?
A stage 3 country has a stable population pyramid, and is shaped like a semi-oval.
(Population pyramids in relation to the DTM) What shape is a stage 4 country?
A stage 4 country is an HIC, and is similar to stage 3, being a semi-oval, however near the bottom the lines curve inwards.
(Population pyramids in relation to the DTM) What shape is a stage 5 country?
A stage 5 country has an ageing population, making the shape be a pentagon with high and straight sides.
