Q

What is the first step in the formation of a sand dune?

14
Q

What is the second step in the formation of a sand dune?

A

Obstacles (e.g. driftwood) decrease wind speed so sand is deposited to form embryo dunes.

15
Q

What is the third step in the formation of a sand dune?

16
Q

What is the fourth step in the formation of a sand dune?

A

Sand stabilises forming foredunes and mature dunes. Decomposing vegetation makes the soil more fertile so more vegetation can grow.

17
Q

What is the last step in the formation of a sand dune?

A

Dune slacks (small pools) can form in depressions in the sand. These are caused by the wind.

18
Q

What fluvian process aids in the formation of a sand dune?

A

Deposition.

19
Q

When sandy beaches are formed, what type of waves are there?

A

Constructive.

20
Q

Why are bays more sheltered?

A

They are protected by headlands.

21
Q

What is a berm?

A

Something that marks the high tide and the extent to the water.

22
Q

What is the fluvial process involved in the forming of a beach?

A

Deposition.

23
Q

Explain the formation of a beach.

A

Sand and shingle are deposited at the coasts.

Often this happens in bays which are more sheltered.

The waves entering the bay are constructive waves. Which have a strong swash and a weak backwash.

Some beaches are made of pebbles.

These are made from nearby eroding cliffs.

A berm on the beach marks where the high tide line is and the extent to the water.
