Transport in plants Flashcards
what two systems do the plants use
the xylem and phloem
what does the xylem do
-carries water and minerals dissolved inside
- are dead cells
- transports from roots to the rest of the plant
what does the lignin do
it reinforces xylem vessels
it is another type of carbohydrate
how does water absorption happen in pathways of water into the root
using osmosis- water enters the cells
how does water absorption happen in bulk transport
water remains between cell wall called membrane
how is mineral uptake done
-most takes up passively with the water (are dissolved inside)
- minerals are also taken up by active transport -they do aerobic respiration to generate the ATP for active transport
what is transpiration
the movement of water through the plant (from roots to leaves)
how does transpiration happen
-driven by the evaporation of water from the stomata in the leaves (provides a suction effect)
- driven by root pressure/ osmotic pressure caused by water entering the roots
- water moves up the xylem vessels also due to capillary action ( an effect by the cohesive and adhesive properties of water)
what does adhesive mean
sticks to other substances/ surfaces
what does cohesive mean
sticks to itself
what is the phloem
transport system for nutrients such as sucrose, amino acids and minerals. Phloem vessels include cells called companion cells
what is a source
a sucrose is produced- leaves and roots
what is a sink
a location the sucrose is used- root, stem, leaves, flower
