Drugs Flashcards
what is a drug
any substance taken into the body that modifies or affects chemical reactions in the body
what is the use of antibiotics for bacterial infection
they are chemical substances made by certain fungi or bacteria that affect the working of bacterial cells, either by disrupting their surfaces or by preventing them from reproducing - antibiotics only kill bacteria NOT viruses
what had happened to the bacteria
the bacteria that causes the disease have become resistant to antibiotics which reduces the effectiveness of antibiotics
why can’t antibiotics kill viruses
because they do not carry any cell functions and do not have any cell walls, cell membrane or any cell organelles
why are antibiotics becoming less effective
1) overuse and being prescribed when not necessary
2) patients do not complete fully prescribed course
3) large scale use of antibiotics in farming even when animals not sick
way to prevent antibiotic resistance
1) taking antibiotics when necessary
2) ensuring treatment is complete
how can bacteria develop antibiotic resistance
plasmids with antibiotic- resistant genes can be shared between bacteria of both the same and different species
