Transpiration and Translocation Flashcards
What is a xylem vessel
it is a dead, long, thick wall, like a straw
What is the purpose of a xylem
To transport water via osmosis
What is transpiration
The flow of water into a root, up the stem, and out of the leaves
What is a phloem vessel
Living vessels associated with companion cells that carry sucrose around the plant
What is Lignin
A polymer substance found in xylem to make them strong and water proof
What is translocation
The transport of mainly sucrose around a plant
What is a companion cell
pumps sucrose by active transport into the phloem cells
What conditions will lead to faster transpiration
Dry, Windy, Hot, High light intensity
What is the stomata
Stomata are tiny holes found in the underside of leaves. They control water loss and gas exchange by opening and closing
How is water pulled up the xylem
Water is taken in via the root hair cells by osmosis where it is then passed through and pulled up the xylem tube, from there it will reach the leaves where is evaporates of, allowing more water to enter
What is an Auxin
Plant hormone, causes phototropism and gravitropism
What is Phototropism
When a stem grows towards the light due to the auxins moving to the shadowed area
What is gravitropism
When a root grows in the direction of gravity due to the auxins moving to the side in which they want to grow towards.
Are stems phototropic or gravitropic
They are phototropic
What cells control the size of the stomata
Guard cells
