Kidneys Flashcards
What is a Nephron
A long tube in the kidneys where filtration and reabsorption occurs
What is the Glomerulus
The network of capillaries found in the bowman’s capsule
What is the Bowmans Capsule
The start of the nephron where filtration occurs
What is filtration
The separation of larger molecules from smaller ones- happens between the glomerulus and the Bowmans capsule
What is selective reabsorption
Taking back some of the useful substances- glucose and mineral ions
What is the Convoluted tubule
It is where reabsorption takes place
What is The loop of Henle
The long loop in the nephron where osmosis can occur
What is a Microvilli
A tiny fold in the cells surface membrane that increases surface area
What is ADH
The hormone that increases the permeability of the collecting duct
What is the collecting duct
The part of the nephron where water is reabsorbed
What is the main job of the kidneys
Filter the blood and remove waste that is mot needed (regulates mineral ions)
Where is urea made and how
It is made in the liver through the process of Deamination (excess amino acids are concerted into carbs for storage)
What is a capillary
delicate blood vessels that exist throughout your body
