How do you manage stressful situations, and can you provide a specific example from your professional experience?
To manage stress, I rely on meticulous planning and rigorous organization, which helps me stay focused and maintain a clear overview of the objectives. Additionally, I ensure to maintain a good work-life balance, including regular relaxation and leisure activities to rejuvenate myself. This approach reduces latent stress and preserves good sleep quality, among other benefits.
When facing challenges, I prioritize open communication with my team and stakeholders to quickly identify problems and find collaborative solutions. I also value adaptability, allowing me to modify action plans reactively and effectively if necessary.
A specific instance where I had to manage a stressful situation was during the organization of ministerial visits. I faced an unexpected challenge: the Minister present wanted a press review in the middle of the day. I approached this by finding an optimal balance between efficiency (quickly producing the press review) and quality (ensuring intelligibility and selecting relevant articles). To achieve this, I abandoned some of my usual habits, like less formatting, and focused on the essentials with a summary indicating the titles of the articles present. This allowed me to produce the review quickly. When I handed it over to the Minister’s press advisor, I noticed her highlighting certain elements before passing it to the Minister.
These experiences have taught me the importance of staying calm and focused, even under pressure. They have also highlighted the importance of continuous learning and adaptation in a dynamic professional environment like the Banque de France.
How do you manage situations where you need to quickly adapt to unexpected changes?
I understand that in a dynamic environment like the Banque de France, it’s essential to be able to rapidly adapt to unexpected changes.
When faced with sudden changes, my first step is to take a moment to assess the new situation. I strive to quickly understand the implications of the change and adjust my action plan accordingly.
I view unexpected changes as opportunities to innovate and improve. I adopt a positive attitude and look for creative solutions to overcome new challenges.
During my internship at an Embassy, ministerial visits were always intense times when nothing went as planned. During one visit, we were scheduled to produce three press reviews: one at 9 AM, another at 3 PM, and the last one at 7 PM. Unexpectedly, the minister requested an additional review at noon. My supervisor was occupied with a press conference at that time, so it fell on me to produce it. Initially, during this time, I was supposed to write an article for the Mission’s website about the usefulness of the visit (signing WTO agreements).
I approached this by finding an optimal compromise between efficiency (quickly producing the press review) and quality (ensuring intelligibility and selecting relevant articles). To achieve this, I abandoned some of my usual habits, like less formatting. I focused on the essentials with a summary indicating the titles of the articles present. This allowed me to quickly produce the review. I ran to the location where the press conference was being held. When I handed it over to the Minister’s press advisor, I saw her highlight certain elements before passing it to the Minister.
These situations taught me the importance of remaining flexible, thinking quickly, and continuing to learn. They also showed me the importance of clear communication with the team to effectively manage changes.
“I believe that staying motivated and engaged in my work, especially in an environment as demanding as the Banque de France, is essential for achieving both personal success and the organization’s goals.”
Work Strategies:
“At work, I employ several strategies to maintain my motivation and engagement. Firstly, I place great importance on organization and anticipation. This allows me to manage my time effectively and reduce stress. I also adopt a structured work method, which helps me clearly track my progress and accomplishments.”
“Communication with my colleagues and building strong team cohesion are also central to my strategy. Cultivating good relationships based on loyalty, trust, and a fair distribution of tasks creates a positive and motivating work environment.”
Personal Life Strategies:
“Outside of work, I pay close attention to my personal well-being. I engage in daily physical activity, which not only contributes to my physical health but also to my mental clarity and energy levels at work.”
“I am also mindful of my nutrition, hydration, and quality sleep. These elements are crucial for maintaining good energy and focus at work.”
“Finally, I ensure that I have moments of entertainment, such as playing music with friends, to relax and recharge. This allows me to return to work reinvigorated and ready to face new challenges.”
Conclusion:
“I find that balancing a methodical approach at work with conscientious attention to my personal well-being is key to staying motivated and engaged, even in the most demanding environments.”
Can you give us a concrete example of how you demonstrated your ability to work in a demanding environment?
During my internship at the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, I faced a significant challenge during the humanitarian emergency in Ukraine. The crisis led to an exponential increase in financial support requests from the private sector, putting our team under considerable pressure due to the suddenly increased workload.
In response to this situation, my first action was to keep my composure. I focused on the importance of staying calm in order to manage the increased workload effectively. I also implemented rigorous priority management, quickly identifying the most urgent and critical requests to maximize our impact and efficiency.
This experience allowed me to demonstrate my ability to work effectively under pressure. It strengthened my capacity to handle demanding situations while maintaining a high quality of work. I learned the importance of organization, task prioritization, and clear communication in a rapidly changing environment.
I am confident that these skills are directly transferable to a role within the Banque de France, where the ability to manage crisis situations and work effectively under pressure is essential.
The Banque de France operates in a complex and constantly evolving environment, necessitating a high capacity for adaptation and resilience to change.
My experience, particularly during my internship at the UNHCR during the humanitarian emergency in Ukraine, has prepared me to work effectively in high-pressure situations. I learned to manage a considerable workload, prioritize tasks, and remain focused despite challenges.
In situations like the one I experienced at the UNHCR, quickly adapting to changes was crucial. This ability to evolve and respond effectively to unexpected situations is crucial for an institution like the Banque de France, where decisions often need to be made swiftly in response to financial market dynamics.
I am confident that my ability to work in a demanding environment and adapt rapidly can significantly contribute to the Banque de France. Whether it’s responding to economic crises, managing complex projects, or adapting strategies to the latest economic trends, I am prepared to bring tangible added value.
I am enthusiastic about applying these skills at the Banque de France and actively contributing to its mission in a role that demands both rigor and flexibility.
In a complex and demanding environment like the Banque de France, a structured and well-organized approach to project management is crucial. I believe the worst scenario is not having enough perspective to make a decision when asked. My method combines meticulous planning, clear definition of objectives, and efficient allocation of resources.
For decision-making, I rely on a thorough analysis of available data, an assessment of risks and potential benefits, and consultation with key stakeholders. I believe in decision-making based on evidence and rigorous analysis.
While being methodical, I remain flexible to adapt to unexpected changes. This involves regularly reevaluating the project and being ready to adjust plans based on new information or changing circumstances.
For example, during my internship at an Embassy, I was tasked with writing articles for the mission’s website. On sensitive human rights issues, I had to get validation from the ambassador. Our usual practice was to publish articles when the Ambassador spoke at the Human Rights Council. One day, the Ambassador forgot to validate my article. I decided not to publish anything, despite our usual practice. I was confident in the quality of my article, but I did not want to break the common diplomatic practice of having the hierarchy validate what we wanted to say to counterparts or the public.
Plus the story of the daily press reviews.
I am convinced that this rigorous, yet flexible approach to project management and decision-making is perfectly suited to the challenges faced by the Banque de France, thus enabling the achievement of both the institution’s objectives and those of specific projects.
Can you tell us about a situation where you had to be proactive in managing missions and projects?
During my time at the UNHCR, I faced the significant challenge of converting one-time donors into regular monthly donors. This required a proactive approach in both data management and strategic communication.
Data Management: The influx of new donors resulted in a massive amount of data that needed to be processed efficiently. Recognizing the need for a streamlined approach, I developed an Excel macro to automate repetitive tasks. This not only expedited the process but also reduced the possibility of human error. Analytics and Insights: I worked with data extracted from Google Analytics to analyze donor behavior. I specifically focused on the average difference in the amount between the first and the last donation for different types of donors. This analysis was vital in identifying which donor categories were most likely to become regular donors – typically those who were increasing their donations both in frequency and amount. Targeted Communication Strategy: Based on these insights, I initiated the development of targeted communication strategies with A/B testing. This involved creating different versions of our communication materials and testing them to see which version resonated more with potential regular donors. The goal was to tailor our messages to the preferences and behaviors of different donor segments, thereby maximizing the likelihood of converting them into regular supporters.
This proactive approach not only improved our donor retention rates but also enhanced the overall efficiency of our fundraising efforts. It was a clear example of how foresight, coupled with effective use of technology and data analytics, can significantly impact the success of a mission. This experience sharpened my skills in proactive project management and data-driven strategy formulation, both of which are essential in any dynamic and goal-oriented work environment.
Describe a situation where you had to show initiative. What did you learn from this experience?
During my time working at the embassy, I identified a potential security issue related to password management and account authentication. Aware of the increasing importance of cybersecurity and the risks of misinformation, I took the initiative to propose an improvement to our security systems.
In collaboration with the IT manager, we implemented several measures, including two-factor authentication for the mission’s Twitter account and the installation of an offline password management program. This initiative greatly improved the security of our accounts, making them more resistant to hacking and misinformation attempts.
This experience taught me the value of daring to propose solutions, even if they might seem minor at first glance. I realized that taking the initiative and actively seeking solutions to potential problems is crucial, especially in a field as critical as cybersecurity. It also showed me the importance of collaborating with the right people to implement effective changes.
I believe this ability to proactively identify problems, propose innovative solutions, and collaborate effectively with colleagues from various departments is directly transferable to a position at the Banque de France, where security and proactivity are paramount.
My Strengths:
Rigor: I am methodical and committed, with a strong desire to deliver my best work. This attention to detail and thorough approach is beneficial in ensuring high-quality outcomes. Eagerness to Learn: I have a strong willingness to learn and develop myself professionally. I actively seek out readings and advice to expand my knowledge and skills. Humility: I am convinced that there's always room for improvement. I am aware of my limitations and never rest on my laurels, which keeps me grounded and open to learning.
Areas for Improvement:
Excessive Honesty: I have a tendency to undervalue myself, which can project a negative self-image. This is something I am working on. I've realized that the only person expecting this critical self-assessment was myself. Tendency to be Intimidated: I sometimes find myself feeling intimidated in high-pressure situations, leading to shyness. This was particularly evident when interacting with high-profile figures like ambassadors, ministers, and UN officials. However, I have made progress, like managing to serve coffee to Agnès Buzin without incident, which shows that I can overcome this tendency with effort and practice.
These strengths and areas for improvement shape my professional approach, guiding both my current contributions and my ongoing development.
One skill that I am particularly keen to improve is my technical expertise in the application of prudential norms, specifically in the context of cyber risk regulation. I am motivated to ensure financial institutions are adequately covered against such risks. To enhance this skill, I plan to learn from the professionals around me at the Banque de France. I also intend to supplement this learning by reading extensively and seeking recommendations for relevant literature.
Another competency I aim to develop further is my economic analysis skills. In my previous experiences, I have been involved in monitoring technical subjects covering various disciplines, each with its own specificities. I would like to gain more technical expertise in economic methodology. This improvement will be crucial in my role, enabling me to contribute more effectively to the Banque de France’s objectives.
I believe that continuous learning and seeking knowledge from experienced professionals are key to improving these skills. I am committed to taking proactive steps towards this, understanding that it will enhance my ability to contribute effectively in my role.
The areas where I consider needing the most development are specifically related to economics. Up to now, my experiences have been more generalist and focused on an international perspective. Therefore, the domains I need to develop further include the implementation of economic policies, handling macroeconomic data, and participating in technical economic work.
To work on these areas of improvement, my plan is as follows:
Engaging in Continued Education: I intend to take specialized courses and training in economics, particularly focusing on macroeconomics and economic policy implementation. This will help me gain a deeper understanding of the theoretical underpinnings and practical applications in these areas. Hands-On Experience: I plan to seek opportunities within my role that allow me to work directly with macroeconomic data and be involved in policy implementation. This practical experience is crucial for developing a comprehensive understanding of the nuances involved in these processes. Mentorship and Professional Guidance: I aim to seek mentorship from seasoned economists and professionals within the Banque de France. Learning from their experiences and insights will provide me with invaluable guidance as I navigate and grow in these domains. Active Participation in Projects: By actively participating in technical economic projects, I can apply what I learn in real-world scenarios, which is instrumental in cementing my understanding and improving my skills. Self-Study and Research: I am committed to self-study, regularly keeping up with current economic research, trends, and policy discussions. This will not only enhance my knowledge but also keep me updated with the latest developments in the field of economics.
I believe that a combination of formal education, practical experience, mentorship, active project participation, and self-guided learning will effectively help me develop in the areas of economic policy implementation, macroeconomic data analysis, and technical economic work.
I manage negative feedback not as criticism but as a valuable opportunity for self-improvement. I consider it essential to receive feedback, especially if it’s negative, as it indicates an opportunity for growth.
I always ensure open communication with my colleagues about my receptiveness to feedback. I regularly encourage them to provide me with honest feedback, firmly believing that it’s by identifying and working on our weaknesses that we can evolve.
For instance, during my first internship, I received negative feedback regarding my written communication style, which was deemed too dense and not well-suited for administrative contexts. Thanks to constructive feedback from my supervisor, I worked on improving my clarity and simplifying my formulations. This learning process helped me develop a more effective communication style, an essential skill in my professional journey.
This experience reinforced my belief that negative feedback is an indispensable learning tool. I always welcome constructive criticism with gratitude, as it enables me to grow professionally and adapt more quickly to new environments
My long-term professional development plans are closely aligned with the diverse opportunities offered by the Banque de France. Growing up, I developed numerous interests, and I am excited about the prospect of working on a variety of different issues throughout my career.
In the short term, I aim to gain technical expertise in my first position, such as conducting on-site controls at the ACPR. A dream role for me in the near future is that of an international banking specialist, which I aspire to take on as my second or third role.
In the medium term, I am very interested in a secondment to an international organization, either to the IMF or the BIS. The emergence of the AMLA also presents an intriguing possibility. I am also keen on working in the field of anti-money laundering.
In the long run, I envision myself moving into a management position. I would like to lead a team, sharing my experiences and learning from theirs.
In any case, my professional life will be focused on constant enrichment. I have always been interested in public policy and am convinced that there is no end to learning and development. I am committed to giving my best in fulfilling my duties.
This position at the Banque de France is a significant step in this journey, providing a platform to develop the necessary skills and experiences that will pave the way for my future roles and aspirations.
Yes, my team spirit is something I attribute to my interest in rugby, which I played at both club and university levels. In rugby, we are often told that “alone we can go fast, but together we go far.” I believe this is true. In a professional setting, especially in an interdisciplinary team, this translates to allowing everyone to showcase their talents and contribute where they are most effective.
In organizing a team, I tend to propose distributing roles so that each person can specialize (applying the theory of comparative advantage). Then, the essence of teamwork lies in communication, ensuring there are no information asymmetries (everyone does what is expected of them, no more, no less). In case of difficulty, the input of a leader is indispensable for making decisions. Additionally, I possess a strong ability to communicate effectively, listen actively, and resolve conflicts, essential for working in harmony and achieving common goals.
In my previous professional experience, I regularly worked in a team to achieve common objectives. For instance, at the UNHCR, we were responsible for regularly reporting on our progress in fundraising during the Ukraine emergency. My proficiency in data analysis enabled our team to be effective: while I produced statistics to illustrate our reports, my team could handle other aspects of the report like writing, translating, and finding illustrations. This teamwork allowed us to effectively communicate our results to our hierarchy with quantifiable data.
At the Banque de France, such organization would lead to the success of projects. Indeed, working in interdisciplinary teams is frequent. Asserting oneself where one is most useful, effectively communicating progress (and difficulties), and having the ability to take initiative or follow a leader’s directives exemplify my competence in organizing and working in a team. I believe this leads to the success of projects because it enables effective collaboration with colleagues, contributes to the creation of innovative solutions, and enhances team efficiency and productivity.
I am eager to apply these skills at the Banque de France, thus contributing to its objectives.
