The effect of learning and performance one skill has on the learning and performance of another.
What are the 4 types of transfer?
- Positive transfer.
- Negative transfer.
- Zero transfer.
- Bilateral transfer.
Define positive transfer
When the learning of one skill helps the learning of another.
- Skills have a similar shape form.
Define negative transfer
When the learning of one skill hinders the learning of another.
- Familiarity between skills= causes confusion.
Define bilateral transfer
The performer transfers skills from one side of their body to the other.
e.g. kicking a football, shoulder pass.
Define zero transfer
When the learning of one skill has no impact on the learning of another.
- No similarities= no confusion.
How can a coach ensure successful transfer?
- Make the performer aware of potential transfer.
- Identify elements that may hinder learning.
- Planned progression.
- Eliminate bad habits.
- Make training sessions realistic.
