Decision making (Perceptual mechanisms) Flashcards
1
Q
What happens at the perceptual mechanisms?
A
- Performer makes a decision based on info from the receptor systems (here selective attention and memory are vital).
2
Q
How does the performer make a decision (brief)
A
- Performer receives info from the short term sensory store.
- Decision process= comparing current info (STM) to previous experiences (LTM)- to determine appropriate action.
3
Q
What is a limitation of the decision making process?
A
- Performer may receive too much info at once through the senses.
- To stop this selective attention occurs.
4
Q
- Selective attention (first perceptual stage)
A
- Filters out irrelevant info.
- Only relevant info is focused/ acted on.
5
Q
What are the factors that influence selective attention?
A
- Stage of learning= cognitive performer means poor SA- leads to info overload and lack of focus= slower decision making.
- Type of skill= Complex- info overload= slow/ incorrect decision.
6
Q
How do we develop selective attention?
A
- Increase fitness levels- reduce the impact of fatigue.
- Modify practice.
- Focus on the important info- developed through varied practice.
- Mental practice- save time and energy during performance.
7
Q
What are the benefits of selective attention?
A
- Aids concentration.
- Controls arousal levels.
- Improves reaction time.
- Reduces chance of info overload.
8
Q
What does DCR stand for?
A
- Detection
- Comparison
- Recognition
9
Q
- DCR process (Second perceptual stage)
A
1) Detection= receive cues + selective attention.
2) Comparison= cues compared with memory stored ones.
- Emphasis on memory system.
3) Recognition= understand what response is required/ identify correct response.
10
Q
Define perception
A
The process of coding and interpreting information gathered from the senses.
11
Q
What are the factors that affect perception?
A
- Too much info
- Unclear info
- Info disguised by opponent- dummy pass.
