What is visual guidance?
A
- Guidance that can be seen, a demonstration.
- Intention is to create a mental image which can be used as a reference point in future practice.
- Key points of the skills should be highlighted, and reinforcement needs to be used- to encourage retention of the skill in the memory.

A
- Highlights weaknesses.
- Suitable for large groups.
- Important for safety- to prevent injury through incorrect technique.

A
- Demonstrations must be accurate- could be copied incorrectly.
- Too much info at once could lead to information overload.
- Not suitable for cognitive performers if used without verbal guidance as well.

What is verbal guidance?
A
- Using words to explain a task.
- Nearly always used in conjunction with visual guidance- highlight key points of a skill.
- Any information given needs to be kept brief and meaningful.

A
- Can be given immediately during performance.
- Used effectively in conjunction with visual guidance.
- Very useful for open skills where performer needs to make decisions and adapt quickly.

- Could experience information overload.
- Lengthy explanations may cause the performer to lose concentration.
- Cognitive performers may not understand specific instructions.

What is manual guidance?
A
- Coach uses their own body to physically support or manipulate the performers body, or to force a response.
- Involves physical support.
- It can involve a type of forced response.

- Effective for cognitive performers.
- Useful in dangerous tasks as it improves safety.
- Reduces fear and anxiety.

- Performer may become reliant on the support.
- Bad habits might be instilled.

A
- Any equipment, apparatus or device used to aid and shape movement.

A
- Effective for cognitive performers.
- Whole skill can be attempted- allows performer to develop kinesthesis.
- Helps build confidence.

A
- Performer may become reliant on the support/ aid.
- Bad habits might be instilled.
- Performer may become demotivated as they feel they are not performing the skill by themselves.
