Response time Flashcards
1
Q
Define reaction time
A
- The time taken from the onset of a stimulus to the onset of a response.
2
Q
Define movement time
A
- The time taken from the start of the movement to the end (to complete a task).
3
Q
Define response time
A
- The time taken from the onset of a stimulus to the completion of a task.
Response time= Reaction time + Movement time.
4
Q
Responding to a stimuli (3 terms).
A
- Reaction time
- Movement time
- Response time
5
Q
- Reaction time
A
- Involves no movement
- Is the time taken from the onset of the stimulus to the onset of the response.
- It is that fraction of a second that it takes us to process the available selected stimuli.
6
Q
What are the 2 types of reaction time?
A
- Simple reaction time
- Choice reaction time
7
Q
Simple reaction time
A
- This is where there is one specific response to one stimulus.
- Fast reaction and response as the athlete only has one thing to think about before they react.
e.g. in a swimming race the stimulus is the starter signal and the only response is to dive in.
8
Q
Choice reaction time
A
- This is where you have to choose from numerous stimuli.
- The response is slower.
- It can also be when the player has to choose a number of responses once the correct stimulus has been chosen.
e.g. in football in open play you may have several team mates calling for a pass and several responses in terms of whom to pass to, type of pass etc.
9
Q
- Movement time
A
- Is the time taken to complete the task after information processing has taken place.
- It is the time from the start of the action to the completion of the action.
10
Q
- Response time
A
- It is the total time it takes from the onset of the stimulus to the completion of the action.
Response time= Reaction time + Movement time.
