Stages of learning Flashcards
1
Q
Define motor skill
A
- Is a function, which involves the precise movement of voluntary muscles with the intent to perform a specific act.
2
Q
Define a motor programme
A
- A series of subroutines organised into the correct sequence to perform a movement. Stored in the long-term memory, retrieved when we need to perform the skill.
3
Q
What are the 3 stages of learning?
A
- Cognitive/ Plan formation phase (Beginner).
- Associative/ Fixation phase (Intermediate).
- Autonomous/ Automatic phase (Master).
4
Q
Define the cognitive stage
A
- The first stage of learning used by novice. Understanding and sub-routines are explored by trial and error.
5
Q
Key characteristics of a cognitive performer
A
- No motor programmes formed.
- Frequent errors made.
- Uncoordinated, jerky movements.
6
Q
Define the associative stage
A
- The second stage of learning a motor programmes are developed and performance is smoother.
7
Q
Key characteristics of the associative stage
A
- Motor programmes forming.
- Smoother movement/ action.
- Errors are no longer major.
8
Q
Define the autonomous stage
A
- The final stage of learning used by an expert when movement is detailed and specific.
9
Q
Key characteristics of the autonomous stage.
A
- Motor programmes are formed.
- Movements are habitual and automatic.
- Performer doesn’t need to think about technique.
