Storing Info Flashcards
1
Q
What are memory stores?
A
- It stores and retrieves info, makes comparisons with previous movement experiences and selects which motor programme to apply to produce movement.
2
Q
What are the 3 parts of the memory store?
A
- Short term sensory store
- Short term memory
- Long term memory
3
Q
What is the short term sensory store?
A
- Receives all information from the display.
- Selective attention occurs (to prevent info overload)
- Passes the relevant info to the STM.
- Holds info for a brief amount of time (few seconds) after the original stimulus has stopped.
4
Q
What is the short term memory?
A
- ‘Working memory system’.
- Receives info from the short term sensory store.
- DCR processes occur.
- Info sent to LTM.
- Limited capacity (can only hold 6-9 items)
- Limited time scale (30 seconds).
Between STM + LTM:
- Encoding: putting things into your memory.
5
Q
What is the long term memory?
A
- Stores past experiences as motor programmes.
- Mental image of movement to be performed.
- All relevant and rehearsed info.
- Info from STM.
- Unlimited capacity.
6
Q
Ways of ensuring effective storage pt.1
A
- Mental rehearsal/ imagery.
- Linking/ association with past experiences (positive transfer).
- Chunking: breaking action into parts or sub-routines.
- Enjoyment/ fun experiences (positive experience= more likely to remember).
7
Q
Ways of ensuring effective storage pt.2
A
- Chaining= linking together pieces of info.
- Reinforcement/ rewards
- Practice/ rehearsal (repetition overlearns/ grooves a skill- create motor programmes to be stored in the LTM).
- Meaningful= performers know the relevance.
