Observational learning theory Flashcards
1
Q
What is the main theory of the OLT?
A
- People learn through watching others (‘model’ performers), whom we respect and admire- significant others (family, coaches, teachers).
2
Q
What happens when we watch someone?
A
- Whilst watching someone we create mental pictures in your head- used to replicate actions at a future date- recall from the memory.
3
Q
Learners are more likely to copy someone if….
A
- Significant others
- Models have similar characteristics.
- Actions are successful/ consistent.
- Status of the model.
- Motivation
- Physical and mental readiness.
4
Q
What are the four observational processes?
A
- Attention
- Retention
- Motor reproduction
- Motivation
5
Q
- Attention
A
- Ensure the performer takes notice and focuses/ concentrates on the demonstrations (avoid distractions).
6
Q
- Retention
A
- Ensure the performer remembers the skill for future reference.
- Mental picture is created.
- Clarity= clear demonstration.
- Recall from memory system.
7
Q
What are attention and retention?
A
Perceptual- taking in info from demo.
8
Q
- Motor reproduction
A
- Performer is able to reproduce the demonstration.
- Ability (physically and mentally).
- Understand the skill and have confidence to attempt it.
9
Q
- Motivation
A
- Performer has the drive to perform the skill.
- Reinforcement.
- Desire to copy.
10
Q
What are Motor reproduction and Motivation?
A
Psychomotor= translating info into physical reaction.
11
Q
What makes a good demo?
A
- ‘Interesting/fun’
- Clear instructions
- Significant others
- Within capability
- Breakdown into subroutines.
