What is ‘skill transfer’?
When the learning of one skill influences the learning of another

Positive, Negative, Proactive, Retroactive and Bilateral
What is positive transfer?
When the earning of one skill aids the learning of another or improves upon a skill that was taught previously
What is negative transfer?
When the learning of one skill hinders the learning of another or reduces the efficiency/ performance of another
Give an example of positive transfer
An overhead serve in volleyball and forehand in tennis
Give an example of negative transfer
A front foot drive in cricket and golfswing
Other than physical sub-routines, what else can be incorporated in transfer?
Mental processes such as decision making, spacial awareness and tactics
What is proactive transfer?
The current learning of a skill will impact the learning of a skill in the future
Give an example of proactive transfer
An overarm throw can help the learning of a javelin throw
What is retroactive transfer?
The learning of a skill now affecting a skill previously taught
Give an example of retroactive transfer
A netball player transferring to basketball may cause them to travel or play reposession when they go back to netball
What is bilateral transfer?
A skill that can be transferred from one limb to another
Give an example of bilateral transfer
An ambidextrous tennis player can play only forehand using both arms to increase specificity of their hits
Ways to ensure positive transfer:
- Awareness of transferrable skills through (1) and (2)
