Skill classification Flashcards
Define a ‘motor skill’
An action with a goal and requires voluntary movement to achieve
What are skills made of?
A mixture of elements
What is used to show the characteristics of skills as they cannot be easily labelled
A continuum
Name the 6 continua that classify skills
Environmental influence, Muscular involvement, Pacing, Continuity, Difficulty and Organisation
Define ‘open skill’
The performance of the skill is affected by external factors such as opponents and so require a reaction
Give an example of an open skill
Front foot drive in cricket
Define ‘closed skill’
Performance of a skill not affected by external factors which gives the performer more control
Give an example of a closed skill
Shot put
Define ‘gross skill’
A skill that requires large muscle groups to be executed and are therefore usually explosive and dynamic
Give an example of a gross skill
High jump
Define ‘fine skill’
Performance of skills that require few/ small muscle groups and so tend to be intricate and precise movements
Give an example of a fine skill
Golf putt
Define ‘self-paced skill’
When the timing and speed of the performance of a skill is predominantly controlled by the performer
Give an example of a self-paced skill
Javelin
Define ‘externally-paced skill’
The timing and speed of the performance of a skill is determined by the environment
Give an example of an externally-paced skil
Receiving a chest pass in netball
Define ‘discrete skill’
When the performance of a skill has a clear start and end
Give an example of a discrete skill
Forehand in tennis
Define ‘serial skill’
When the performance of a skill is made up of discrete elements performed in a certain order
Give an example of a serial skill
Triple jump
Define ‘continuous skill’
When the performance of a skill does not have a clear start or end
Give an example of a continuous skill
Cycling
Define ‘simple skill’
A skill made up of few subroutines and little perceptual load
Give an example of a simple skill
A racing dive in swimming
Define ‘complex skill’
A skill made up of many subroutines and a great perceptual load
Give an example of a complex skill
A bowl in cricket
Define ‘low organisation skill’
Contains subroutines that can be separated and taught easily
Define ‘high organisation skill’
A skill without subroutines that cannot be simplified and so taught as a whole
What is the environment influenced continuum?
Open and closed skills
What is the muscular involvement continuum?
Gross and fine skills
What is the pacing continuum?
Externally and self-paced skills
What is the continuity continuum?
Discrete, Serial and Continuous skills
What is the difficulty continuum?
Simple and complex skills
What is the organisation continuum?
Low and high organisation skills
