Define ‘attitude’
A predisposition to act in a certain way towards some aspect of a person’s environment including other people
Define ‘attitude object’
The thing a person has a predisposition to act towards either positive or negatively
Name the three components of the triadic model
Affective component, Cognitive component, Behavioural component
Describe the three components within the triadic model
Affective: feelings and emotions
Cognitive: beliefs formed by experience and the influence of others
Behavioural: Actions towards an attitude object
Give six examples of a positive attitude in sport
- Believe in the values of their sport
- Enjoyment
- Good at it (not necessarily)
- Excited by physical challenge
- Stress relief
- Participation is a social norm
Give five examples of a negative attitude in sport
- Dislike physical activity
- Frightened by physical activity
- Cause of stress and anxiety
- Non-participation is a social norm
- Perceived low ability
Name two ways an attitude can be changed
Cognitive dissonance and persuasion
What is cognitive dissonance?
Exposing a negative component of the triadic model and making it vulnerable to change
Give an example of cognitive dissonance
Boys believing that gymnastics is a girls sport being shown videos of successful male gymnasts
Describe persuasion as a way of changing attitude
The persuader is deemed a ‘significant other’ gives a relatable message appealing to the qualities of a performer which will enable them to either accept or reject the message
