Leadership Flashcards
Name the two types of selection of leadership
Emergent (chosen from within the group) and prescribed (appointed from an external source)
Give an advantage and two disadvantages of an emergent leader
😁 - pre-established relationships and respect from knowing the group
☹️ - lack experience in management
☹️ - may be biased due to friendships within the group so lack objectivity as they are focused in not upsetting the group
Give two advantages and one disadvantage of a prescribed leader
😁 - immediate status due to previous experience and selection
😁 - no pre-conceived ideas causing bias as they don’t know the group dynamics
☹️ - they need time to understand the group dynamics so their decisions aren’t accurate straight away
Name three theories of leadership
Trait theory, social learning theory and interactionist theory
Describe trait theory
Leaders are born because the desired characteristics are innate
This would suggest that leaders are good in every situation
Give an example of trait theory not being accurate
Martin Johnson was a successful rugby player in the World Cup but a poor manager
Describe social learning theory
Leaders are made by imitating role models also known as vicarious learning
Give two criticisms of social learning theory
People have free will to choose who they copy
Just because people are exposed to poor leadership doesn’t mean they can’t become successful leaders
Describe interactionist theory
Leaders emerge from situations they are exposed too but not necessarily in every day tasks
