Define ‘social facilitation’
The presence of an audience causes an increase in arousal which results in a high probability of the performer performing a dominant response
When might social facilitation improve performance?
Task is simple and or the performer is in the autonomous stage of learning
When might the presence of an audience cause social inhibition?
If the task is complex or the performer is in the cognitive stage of learning
What is evaluation apprehension?
(Cottrill) An increase in arousal is caused by a feeling of judgement of the audience
What situational factors improve performance?
- Supportive home crowd
- Extravert/ Type B personality
- Experienced in front of a crowd
- Autonomous
- Simple/ Gross skill
- Nature and proximity of the crowd
What situational factors inhibit performance?
- More pressure to win a home game
- Intravert/ Type A (more prone to stress)
- Inexperienced in front of an audience
- Cognitive stage of learning
- Complex or fine skill
- Nature and proximity of the crowd
- Knowledgeable crowd/ commentary
How can a performer cope with an audience?
- Selective attention
- Mental rehearsal/ imagery
- Practice in front of an audience
- Over learn the skill so the DR is well grooved
- Positive self talk
- Positive reinforcement by social support
- Decrease perceived importance of the event
