Q

In eukaryotic cells how can transcription of target genes be stimulated or inhibited?

A

= when specific transcriptional factors move from cytoplasm into the nucleus
= this can turn off/on genes so that only certain proteins, are produced in a particular cell
= enables them to be specialised

Q

What are transcriptional factors?

A

= proteins
= each one bind to a different base sequence on DNA and therefore initiate transcription of a gene and activate rna polymerase– binds to the promoter region
= when bound transcription begins, creating mrna molecule and translrted in cytoplasm
= without the binding, the gene is inactive and protein wont be made
= receptors and dna binding site, and rna polymerase can bind

Q

How does oestrogen work?

A

= steroid hormone- intiates transcription
= binding to a receptor site, on transcriptional factor
= when binds to a transcirptional factor this causes it to change shape slightly, and this makes it complemenayr, and able to bind to the DNA ro enable transcriptiom
