Nitrogen cycle: Flashcards
What are mycoorhizae?
= contains root nodules- lugimonous plants
= provides an increased surface area for water and inorganic ions, and acts as a sponge by being able to easily absorb these- in xchange receiev organic proudcts
Whwre is notrigen found?
= proteins
= DNA
= RNA
= ATP
What are the stages?
= nitrogen fixing
=ammonification
= nitrification
= denitrification
What is nitrogen fixing?
= nitrogem fixing bacteria
either done freely ijn the soil or by lugminous plant root nodules
= converts atmosphereic nitrogen (n2) into ammonium ions, Nh4+
=
What is ammonification?
= organic nitrogen, from decomposition of proteins , DNA, urea etc
= converted into ammonium ions and released into the soil
= carried out by saprobionts, bacteria and fungi, that can digest waste extraceullarly
=
What do saprobioants do?
= = extraceullar digestion
= secretes enzymes outside, dead material,
= products are then absorbed by the saprobioants
= nitrogen containing compounds
What is nitrification?
= ammonium ions in the soil, are oxidised into nitrites and then into nitrates
= by nitrifying bacteria
= 2 stage oxidation reaction
What is dentrification?
= converts nitrogens in the compounds, back into N2 gas
= not useful as cannot be absorbed by plants
= anaerobic bactera, conditions
=
