Phosphorous cycle Flashcards
What is phosphorous used for?
= ATP, phospholipids, DNA, RNA,
Is phosphorous found in the atmosphere?
= no
= it is not a gas in the atmosphere
= mainly found as a phosphate ion , in minerals forms,
What are mycorhizae?
= fungals between roots and fungi
= fungi increases SA for water and mineral asbsorption
= acts like a sponge so holds water and minerals around the roots
= this makes the plants more drought resistance and able to take up inorganic ions
= mutualistic relationshios
=
What happens to phosphate ions in water and soil?
= plants absorb these ions by active transport- used in dna
= animals eat this plant, digested, absorbs and use these for biological molecules
= some excretion contains phosphate ions- may return to the oceans,
= decomposition when the animal dies, break down of material
=
What parts of excretion and an
= waste and remains
=including bones, guano and shells
= these erode break down and release phosphate ions back into oceans and soils
= some goestowards phosphate ions in rocks, or deposition where it forms phosphate ions in rocks, these are eroded and returns ions back into oceans and soils
= addition of fertilisiers to land run off the oceans
What is sedementation?
= sedement builds upm creates rocks over yeards and these ave phospate ions
What happens first?
= environmental conditions causes releae of phosphate ions by rocks and soil and bodies of water
= planrs take in these phosphate ions assiiltae
= animals eat these plants, and use the ions to synthesei organic matter,
= animals die and decompose
= phosphate ions in soil
= bacteria in soil breakd own the phosphate ions, into inroganic forms
= these can end up in water ways again and be assinikatked by plans
