tracts/pathways for exam 2 Flashcards
1
Q
ascending (sensory) tracts
A
- dorsal columns
- spinothalamic tract
- spinocerebellar tract
2
Q
descending (motor) tracts
A
- corticospinal (pyramidal) tracts
- vestibulospinal tract
- reticulospinal tract
3
Q
fasciculus cuneatus and faciculus gracilis are
A
- unconscious proprioception
- divisions of dorsal fasciculus (white matter)
4
Q
fasciculus cuneatus controls
A
sensation of upper extremities
5
Q
fasciculus gracilis controls
A
sensation of lower extremities
6
Q
dorsal column pathway steps:
A
- sensory signal occurs triggering action potential
- action potential travels to DRG
- action potential synapses @ dorsal foniculus
- signal ascends to dorsal column nuclei in medulla
- signal decussates midline of the brain
- signal ascends through medial lemniscus (medulla, pons, midbrain)
- synapses at ventral posterior lateral nucleus
- travels to post central gyrus in cerebral cortex
7
Q
spinothalamic tract
A
- sensation afferents to DRG
- synapse in dorsal horn @ substantia gelatinosa with 2nd motor neuron
- cross over to ventral & opposite side
- synapse in lateral foniculus
- ascends to VPL in thalamus
- travels and synapses in post central gyrus
8
Q
corticospinal (pyramidal) pathway
A
- signal starts at pre-central gyrus
- descends brain stem in ventral surface of pyramids
- decussates at the pyramids of medulla
- descends spinal cord via white matter
- synapse at lateral foniculus
- some terminate here
- others terminated on motor neurons of ventral horn to send motor signals
9
Q
dorsal columns are responsible for
A
- fine touch
- discriminatory somatosensory
10
Q
spinothalamic tract is responsible for
A
- pain and temperature sensation
11
Q
corticospinal (pyramidal) tract is responsible for
A
voluntary movement
