Topic 9 - 9.2 - Reactions of Metals Flashcards
1
Q
Name the 3 substances metals can react with.
A
- water, acid and oxygen
- the reactivity of the metal decide which reactions it takes part in.
2
Q
- Which metals react with water
- What is the general equation?
A
- Potassium down to Magnesium
- Metal + water → Metal hydroxide + Hydrogen
3
Q
- Which metals react with acids
- What is the general equation?
A
- Potassium down to Lead
- Metal + Acid → Salt + Hydrogen
4
Q
Describe the relationship between the ranking of the reactivity series and the rate of reaction of each metal
A
Higher ranking in the reactivity series = faster rate of reaction
e.g. Mg reacts faster than Cu because its higher in the series
5
Q
- Which metals react with oxygen
- What is the general equation?
A
- Potassium down to Silver
- Metal + Oxygen → Metal Oxide
6
Q
List the reactivity series in order of highest to lowest
A
- Potassium (K)
- Sodium (Na)
- Lithium (Li)
- Calcium (Ca)
- Magnesium (Mg)
- Aluminium (Al)
- Zinc (Zn)
- Iron (Fe)
- Nickel (Ni)
- Tin (Sn)
- Lead (Pb)
- Copper (Cu)
- Mercury (Hg)
- Silver (Ag)
- Gold (Au)
