Topic 2 - 2.2 - The Nucleus Flashcards
Where are the PROTONS, NEUTRONS and ELECTRONS located in the atom?
Protons - Inside the Nucleus
Electrons - Outside nucleus in shells
Neutrons - Inside the Nucleus
What is the relative mass of Protons and Neutrons?
1.
What is the formula for finding out the Mass number of an element?
Mass number = protons + neutrons
Formula for finding out the amount of Neutrons in an element?
neutrons = mass number - atomic number
What does the Atomic number equal?
the number of protons.
Why do atoms have no charge?
They have no charge because they contain equal numbers of positive protons and negative electrons.
What is the charge of a:
* PROTON?
* NEUTRON?
* ELECTRON?
Proton: +1
Neutron: 0
Electron: - 1
(REMEMBER TO ADD THE ‘+’ AND ‘-‘ SIGN)
What is the MASS of a:
- PROTON?
- NEUTRON?
- ELECTRON?
Proton: 1
Neutron: 1
Electron: 0
(DO NOT ADD THE PLUS SIGN FOR THE MASS)
