Nature's Chemistry - Energy Flashcards
Define Energy?
Energy is the capacity to do work and cannot be created or destroyed. It can only be converted from one form into another.
Name the 7 most common types of energy
- Light
- Heat
- Sound
- Electrical
- Kinetic (movement/motion)
- Potential (stresses)
- Chemical
Where do humans get their energy from?
We get our energy from food to complete daily tasks
What type of energy does our food contain?
It contains chemical energy. In order to use this energy, our bodies need to release it.
Name the 3 elements that make up carbohydrates
- Carbon
- Hydrogen
- Oxygen
Define Carbohydrates
Carbohydates are compounds that have a lot of chemical energy stored in the chemical bonds that hold the elements together.
Describe a simple carbohydrate
Simple, small carbohydrates are quickly broken down and release energy quickly.
Describe a complex carbohydrate
Complex carbohydrates need to be broken down into sugar molecules first before the body can use them. They release energy slowly
Name a simple carbohydrate
Glucose (sugar)
Name a complex carbohydrate
Starch
What process releases energy from carbohydrates?
Cellular Respiration
What do high carbohydrate foods have more of?
Energy
