Topic 3 - 3.1 - Ionic Bonding Flashcards
All —— lose —– to become positive ions and all ____ gain electrons to become ____ ions.
All metals lose electrons to become positive ions and all non-metals gain electrons to become negative ions
Do ionic bonds have high melting/boiling points or low melting/boiling points? Explain your answer
They have high melting/boiling points because they are really strong.
What is an IONIC BOND?
It is an electrostatic force of attraction between positivley charged ions and negativley charged ions. It occurs between a metal and non-metal.
Do most ions have colour?
No, they are colourless. When they are in a solid compound, they appear white.
When do ionic substances conduct electricity? Explain why this is.
They only conduct electricity in solution or molten (liquid) .This is because the ions are able to move freely in solution or liquid form.
Define Valency
Number of electrons needed to lose or gain to become stable
