Topic 3 - 3.3 - Covalent Bonding Flashcards
What is the name for two non-metals sharing electrons?
Covalent Bonding
What is a covalent bond?
A covalent bond is a shared pair of electrons between two non-metal atoms. It is the electrostatic force of attraction between the positively charged nuclei of each atom and the negatively charged electrons. (This is what holds the atoms together)
What are diatomic molecules/elements?
Diatomic elements are pure elements that form molecules consisting of two atoms bonded together
Name all 7 of the diatomic elements
- Iodine
- Bromine
- Chlorine
- Fluorine
- Oxygen
- Nitrogen
- Hydrogen
Explain why covalent molecules have low melting and boiling points
Because the weak intermolecular forces (forces between molecules) only require a small amount of energy to break, which means they’ll break at low temperatures.
Why is the force of attraction weak between covalent molecules?
Because of the weak Intermolecular forces
