Topic 2 - 2.1 - The Periodic Table Flashcards
What are the rows and columns in the periodic table called?
Rows: Periods
Columns: Groups
How are elements in the Periodic Table arranged?
They are arranged in order of increasing atomic number.
Describe the conductivity of metals and non-metals.
Metals are conductors, non-metals are insulators, with the exception of carbon in the form of graphite.
Name all 4 groups in the Periodic Table
- Group 1: Alkali Metals
- Group 7: Halogens
- Group 8/0: Noble Gasses
- Group 4-1: Transitional Metals
Define the term ELEMENT and ATOM, referencing each to eachother.
- An element is a substance that is made up of only one type of atom
- An atom is the smallest unit of an element.
What is a MOLECULE made up of?
It is made up of two or more atoms chemically bonded together (they are very small).
Why do elements in the same group have similar chemical properties?
Because they have the same number of electrons in their outermost shell and the same valency. This also determines how elements react
Why are the Noble Gasses very unreactive?
Because they have full outer shells, meaning they don’t need to react with other elements to gain or lose electrons.
What is a Compound?
A compound is a mix of two elements chemically bonded together in a fixed ratio
What is the relative atomic mass of an element?
An average mass of an atom and the abundance of each isotope
