Acid rain and the Atmosphere Flashcards
What is the pH of normal rain and why?
Normal rainwater pH - 5 or 6
This is because of the naturally occuring Carbon Dioxide dissolving in the rainwater to make Carbonic Acid.
What is acid rain?
Acid rain is any form of precipitation of high levels of sulfuric acid and nitric acid.
What chemicals does burning fossil fuels produce?
Carbon Dioxide
What happens when Carbon Dioxide is dissolved in water?
It creates an acidic solution called Carbonic Acid.
Which chemical exists naturally in the atmosphere?
Carbon Dioxide
Give an example of acid rain.
Burning sulfur produces sulfur dioxide, when dissolved in water makes an acidic solution.
Acid rain can form in the atmosphere, the main cause is:
Sulfur dioxide from the burning of coal
Burning fossil fuels is bad for the environment because:
It produces carbon dioxide which contributes to global warming
What is Acid rain a consequence of?
Air pollution
