Nature's Chemistry - Biomass Flashcards
What is used to test for Carbon Dioxide and why?
Limewater, because it turns limewater milky
Name the two chemical tests done for water.
- Water is the only liquid that freezes at 0C and boils at 100C
- Water turns cobalt chloride paper from blue to pink.
Define a Biomass
Biomass is matter from recently living organisms which is used for bioenergy production.
What can be used as an alternative to Fossil Fuels?
Biomass
List 5 examples of biomass
- Wood
- Crops and Vegetation
- Manure
- Garbage
- Natural Gas
Define a Biofuel
A biofuel is a fuel that is produced from a natural source.
List 5 examples of Biofuels
- Wood
- Biogas
- Biodiesel
- Ethanol
- Methanol
How can Ethanol be produced?
Ethanol can be produced by the process of Microbial Fermentation. During alcoholic fermentation, yeast converts sugars into carbon dioxide (CO2) and ethanol
How is bioethanol made?
Bioethanol is made via microbial fermentation
What is released when bioethanol is burned?
Carbon Dioxide + Water
How is biomass made?
Plants make biomass, including carbohydrates, during photosynthesis by reacting carbon dioxide and water together to make glucose and oxygen.
Why are biofuels considered as carbon netural?
The CO2 they release when they burn is equal to the CO2 the plants absorb when they grow. So overall, no net CO2 is produced.
Why is photosynthesis important for biofuels?
Photosynthesis creates biomass that can be converted to renewable bioenergy.
