Topic 8: Membranes Flashcards
simplest organs
only 2 tissue types
o consist of epithelium attached to CT (with a basement membrane between them)
List the membrane types
1) Mucous Membranes (mucosa)
2) Serous Membranes (serosa
3) Synovial Membranes
4) Cutaneous Membranes
Mucous Membranes (mucosa)
line cavities which open directly to the body exterior
also called the mucosa of the… e.g. digestive, respiratory, urinary, reproductive systems
Describe the 2 layers of tissue that compsose the mucosa
a) epithelial layer (avascular) varies from simple squamous to pseudostratified
b) CT (loose areolar – vascular), named the lamina propria, nourishes epithelial cells
Serous Membranes (serosa)
line closed cavities that DO NOT open to the exterior i.e. abdominal and chest cavities
covers organs in these cavities
also called serosa in the… (especially the peritoneal cavity
double membranes - each composed of epithelial layers (often simple squamous) next to
serous cavity, & CTs (areolar):
parietal layer
against cavity wall
visceral layer
against organ
Pleura
lung
¦ e.g. parietal & visceral pleura
Peritoneum
abdominal organs
Pericardium
heart
Synovial Membranes
in joints
areolar CT, no epithelium (only ONE tissue type!)
Cutaneous Membranes
skin
o epithelium = stratified squamous (named the epidermis)
o CT = areolar and dense irregular (named the dermis)
