TOPIC 3 Taxonomy Flashcards
Toxonomy
the scientific discipline concerned with naming and classifying organisms
Nomenclature
a system of rules to name things
Problems with common names
different names for the same species because of different languages (horse versus caballo), same name for different species (magpie in North America and Australia), the common name may imply relationship that does not exist (jellyfish, crayfish, silverfish)
Linnaean System
2 parted scientific name (binomial) and uses hierarchical classification of species into groups based on the similarity of structures, functions, and other features
Binomial classification
• Genus + specific name/epithet
Hierarchical classification
classification groups species into increasingly broad categories, based on the degree to which they share characteristics
Classification order:
species, genus, family, order, class, phylum, kingdom, and domain
taxon
a taxonomic unit at any level of a hierarchical classification
3 broadest levels of classification
Domain Bacteria, Domain Archaea, Domain Eukaryotes
