TOPIC 2 Scientific Method Flashcards
Inquiry
the search for information and explanation
Theories
a unifying explanation of the natural world or a “body of knowledge”
Scientific Theories
broad natural explanation for a wide range of natural phenomena
Scientific Theories are:
Strongly supported by many different lines of evidence and are widely accepted as valid
Repeatedly confirmed through observation and experimentation
Reliable accounts of the natural world
Scientists make observations then form and test ____
hypothesis
The scientific process icnludes
making observations (collect data), forming logical hypotheses, and testing the hypotheses
Data
recorded observations of items of information
Types of Data
Qualitative data: descriptions
Quantitative Data: recorded measurements
Facts
data that has been repeatedly confirmed by observations or experimentation
Observation leads to:
the formation of questions and why were seeing what we are seeing
Inductive reasoning
draws conclusions through the logical process of induction
Hypothesis
a tentative or proposed explanation for a set of observations based on available data guided by inductive reasoning
A hypothesis is:
knowledge based, tentative (can easily be changed)
Deductive Reasoning
make specific predictions that we can test with a hypothesis and uses general premises to make specific predictions (from general to specific)
Correlation
relationship/association between two factors
