TMJ and TMJ Special Tests Flashcards
Arthrology
Synovial joint with articular surfaces covered by dense fibrous connective tissue
Articular disc composed of
dense fibrous connective tissue without blood vessels or nerves in pressure bearing areas
Discal ligaments function to
restrict movement in sagittal plane
Superior retrodiscal lamina (superior stratum) composed of
elastic connective tissue
counteracts forward pull of superior lateral pterygoid muscle on articular disc
Retrodiscal pad consists of
loose neurovascular connective tissue
Joint movement
Combination of hinge axis rotation in disc condyle complex and sliding movement of the upper joint
Joitn mvoement - Fucntional opening, rotation and translatory glide
Opening - 40 mm
Rotation - 25 mm
Translatory glide - 15 mm
TMJ compression special test - tests for what
Evaluates for pain with compression of retrodiscal tissues
TMJ compression special test - how to perform
Pt sitting or supine
Support/Stablize head with one hand
Other hand pushes mandible sup, causing compression to TMJ
