Hip Special Tests Flashcards
Patrick’s (FABER) Test - Tests for what
Dysfunction of hip, such as mobility restriction
Patrick’s (FABER) Test - How to perform
Pt supine
Passively flex, abduct, ER leg so foot rests above knee of opp leg
Slowly lower leg towards table surface
Grind (Scouring) Test - Tests for what
Degenerative joint disease
Grind (scouring) test - how to perform
Pt supine
Hip in 90 flex and knee max flex
Compressive load into femur via knee
Trendelenburg sign - tests for what
weakness of glut med or unstable hip
Trendelenburg sign - how to perform
Pt standign and asked to stand on one leg and flex opp knee
Trendelenburg sign - positive if
ipsilateral hip drops when lower limb support is removed while standing
Thomas test - tests for what
tightness of hip flexors
Thomas test - how to perform
Pt supine with one hip and knee max flex to chest and held there
Observe whether hip flexion occurs in other leg
Ober’s test - tests for what
Tightness of TFL and/or IT band
Ober’s test - how to perform
Pt in sidelying
LE flexed at hip and knee
Passively extend, abduct testing hip with knee flexed 90
Modified (knee ext)
Elys test - tests for what
Tightness of rectus femoris
Elys test - how to perform
Pt prone
Knee of testing limb flex
Pos if hip flexes
90-90 hamstring test - tests for
Tightness of hamstrings
90 90 hamstring test - how to perform
pt supine
hip and knee supported in 90 flex
passively ext knee until barrier
Pos if unable to reach 10 from neutral (lacking 10 of extension
Piriformis test - tests for
Piriformis syndrome
Piriformis test - how to perform
Pt supine
Foot of test leg passively placed lateral to opposite limb’s knee
Testing hip is abducted
Pos if knee is unable to pass over resting knee or sx
Leg length test - tests for what
leg length discrepancy
Leg length test - how to perform
Pt supine with pelvis balanced
Measure distance from ASIS to med or lat malleolus
Craig’s test - tests for what
Abnormal femoral antetorsion angle
Craig’s test - how to perform
Pt prone with knee flexed to 90
Palpate greater troch and slowly move hip through IR and ER
When greater troch feels most lateral, stop and measure angle of leg relative to line perpendicular to table surface
Normal - between 8 and 15 IR
Less than 8 - retroversion
More than 15 - anteversion
FADDIR/FADIR test - tests for what
Ant sup impingement
Iliopsoas tendinopathy
Anterior labral tears
FADDIR/FADIR test - how to perform
Pt supine
Involved LE taken from full passive hip flex, abd, and ER into flex, add, and IR
