Lower leg conditions Flashcards
Anterior compartment syndrome is what
Increased compartmental pressure resulting in a local ischemic condition
Anterior compartment syndrome - chronic or exertional s/s
produced with exercise or exertion and described as deep, cramping feeling
Anterior compartment syndrome - acute s/s
produced by sudden trauma causing swelling within the compartment
Acute ACS is considered
a medical emergency and requires immediate surgical intervention with fasciotomy
Anterior tibial periostitis (shin splints) - three common etiologies
Abnormal biomechanical aligment
Poor conditioning
Improper training methods
Anterior tibial periostitis (shin splints) - common mm involved
anterior tib
extensor hallucis longus
Medial tibial stress syndrome - is what
overuse injury of post tib and/or medial soleus resulting in periosteal inflammation at muscular attachments
Medial tibial stress syndrome - etiology is thought to be
excessive pronation
Medial tibial stress syndrome - pain elicited with palpation of
distal posteromedial border of tibia
Stress fractures - overuse injury resulting in
microfracture of tibia or fibula
Stress fractures - what percent involve tibia? fibula
49% tibia
10% fibula
Stress fractures - three common etiologies
abnormal biomechanics
poor conditioning
improper training methods
