Tibiofibular and Ankle Joints Flashcards
Superior tibiofibular joint
Plane synovial joint - slight gliding movements during dorsiflexion of the foot
What are the two tibiofibular joints?
Superior tibiofibular and inferior tobiofibular (tibiofibular syndesmosis) joints
Tibiofibular syndesmosis joint
Compound fibrous joint - slight movement to accommodate talus during dorsiflexion on the foot
What is the function of the tibiofibular syndesmosis joint?
Keeps the lateral malleolus firmly against the lateral surface of the talus
What type of joint is the ankle joint?
Synovial hinge
What articular surfaces comprise the ankle joint?
Distal ends of tibia and fibula which form a malleolar mortise into which the trochlea of the talus fits
What three main ligaments prevent the spread of the tibia and the fibula?
Interosseous tibiofibular ligament and anterior and posterior tibiofibular ligaments
When is the ankle joint unstable?
Plantarflexion
What reinforces the ankle joint laterally?
Lateral ligament of the ankle
What are the three lateral ligaments of the ankle?
Anterior talofibular ligament, posterior talofibular ligament, and calcaneofibular ligament
What reinforces the ankle joint medially?
Medial ligament of the ankle
What are the four parts of the medial ligament of the ankle?
Tibionavicular, tibiocalcaneal, and anterior and posterior tibiotalar parts
What does the medial ligament of the ankle do?
Stabilizes ankle joint during eversion of the foot and prevents subluxation of the ankle joint
What are the movements of the ankle joint?
Dorsiflexion and plantar flexion
