Temporal Region Flashcards
What type of joint is the temoromandibular joint?
Modified hinge synovial - movement in three planes
What divides the parts of the maxillary artery?
Relation to the lateral pterygoid muscle
What are the articular surfaces of the TMJ joint?
Head of mandible, articular tubercle of temporal bone, and the mandibular fossa
What is different about the articular surface of the TMJ joint?
Covered in fibrocartilage rather than hyaline cartilage as in a typical synovial joint
What are the intrinsic structures of the TMJ joint capsule?
Lateral ligament and postglenoid tubercle
What are the two extrinsic ligaments of the TMJ joint?
Stylomandibular ligament and sphenomandibular ligament
What connects the mandible to the cranium?
Two extrinsic ligaments and the lateral ligament
What occurs during translation of the mandible?
Head of the mandible and articular disc move anteriorly on the articular surface until the head lies inferior to the articular tubercle
What occurs during protrusion and retrusion of the mandible?
Mandibular head and articular disc slide anteriorly and posteriorly on the articular surface of the temporal bone
