Nose Flashcards
What are the two parts of the nasal cavity?
Olfactory area (superior one third) and a respiratory area (inferior two thirds)
What are the two part of the nose?
External nose and nasal cavities (divided into right and left by nasal septum)
What are the functions of the nose?
Olfaction, respiration, filtration of dust, humidification of inspired air, and reception and elimination of secretions from the nasal mucosa, paranasal sinuses, and nasolacrimal ducts
What are the two parts of the external nose?
Bony and cartilaginous parts
What are the bony parts of the external nose?
Nasal bones, frontal processes of the maxillae, nasal part of the frontal bone and its nasal spine, and bony part of the nasal septum
What comprises the cartilaginous part of the external nose?
Five main cartilages: two lateral, two alar, and one septal cartilage
What do the nasal cavities communicate with?
- Posteriorly - nasopharynx
- Superiorly and laterally - paranasal sinuses
- Superiorly - lacrimal sacs and conjuctiva
What are the three parts of the roof of the nasal cavity?
Frontonasal, ethmoidal, and sphenoidal parts
What are the components of the nasal septum (medial wall of the nasal cavity)?
Perpendicular plate of the ethmoid, vomer, septal cartilage, and nasal crest of the maxillary and palantine bones
What are the four passages of the nasal conchae?
Sphenoethmoidal recess, superior nasal meatus, middle nasal meatus, and inferior nasal meatus
What is the semilunar hiatus?
Semicircular groove which the frontonasal duct opens
What is the Kiesselbach area?
Anastomosis of the five arteries supplying the nasal septum: sphenopalantine artery, anterior and posterior ethmoidal arteries, greater palantine artery, superior labial artery, and lateral nasal branches of the facial artery
What are the four paranasal sinuses?
Frontal sinus, ethmoidal sinus, sphenoidal sinus, and maxillary sinus
Where does the frontal sinus drain through?
Frontonasal duct into the ethmoidal infundibulum, which opens into the semilunar hiatus of the middle meatus
Where do the ethmoidal sinuses drain into?
Anterior cells - middle meatus through the infundibulum
Middle cells - middle meatus
Posterior cells - superior meatus
